DIY Lamp Makeover

I love turning something old into something new. So I bought this lamp at Goodwill for $3 and transformed it for under $10. It was very retro, but I had a vision for it. When I go thrifting, I try to find pieces that have potential. So when I saw the shape of this lamp, I knew I could spray paint it a different color, change the lampshade and give it a modern update.

Thrift Store Lamp

I first made sure the light worked! I then cleaned the lamp and removed the old lampshade. Next, I covered up the lamp using pre-taped painter’s plastic, so just its base was exposed. Next, I sanded the lamp’s base with fine-grit sandpaper for the spray paint to have something to grip to.

After Sanding

I first spray-painted it white for a base layer to hide the bright red and added textured paint on top. The painting took a few coats. Once dry, I removed the tape and plastic and added a light bulb along with a new lampshade. I used a lampshade from a lamp I wasn’t using anymore, but you can find high-quality shades at a reasonable price at Target. I’ll link to an example below.
